Every kid wants to be a hero. And this spring, children across the United States can join the National Wildlife Federation's Butterfly Heroes campaign. The free program will give away 10,000 Butterfly Heroes Garden Kits to engage families in saving monarch butterflies.

According to the NWF, the pollinator's numbers have declined by 90 percent in recent years. One reason is that the butterflies are losing important habitats where they can rest their wings, find flower nectar and lay eggs as they migrate north in the springtime.

To combat this trend, the free Butterfly Heroes Garden Kits will include milkweed seeds, which families can plant in their yards to attract butterflies. The plant is a favorite of monarchs--they lay their eggs on milkweed leaves, which provide food to hatching caterpillars.

To get your kit, kids can take the Butterfly Hero pledge by submitting a photo of themselves showing the international sign language for "butterfly." In addition to receiving the free kit, participants who take the pledge by May 15 will also be eligible to win a trip for four to Walt Disney World.
