Every summer, young performers flock to the Arkansas Repertory Theatre for the annual Summer Musical Theatre Intensive—a theater training program for children ages 10 and up. This summer has been no different, with young dancers tapping away, singers taking voice lessons, and performers learning about costuming and stage makeup.

But, there has been one new addition to the 2015 SMTI sessions: The first Young Artists Showcase, a cabaret-style event, took place on Monday, July 20. The Senior Showcase featured young artists ages 16-23 performing a variety of dance, vocal and performance pieces. A second Young Artists Showcase starring performers ages 13-15 will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3.

Admission for these informal cabaret shows is just $5 at the door, and proceeds from each showcase benefit The Rep's Young Artist's Scholarship Fund.

You can also see the talented young artists from the SMTI program perform during public performances of "Really Rosie," a musical from Maurice Sendak ("Where the Wild Things Are") and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Carole King. In the play, Rosie is a sassy Brooklyn kid who entertains herself and her friends by acting out showbiz fantasies.

The next SMTI performances of "Really Rosie" will be 7 p.m. July 31, 1 & 7 p.m. Aug. 1. To purchase tickets, call The Rep’s Box Office at (501) 378-0405 or visit TheRep.org.
