In honor of National Adoption Month, Little Rock Family will be sharing adoption stories all throughout November. We were inspired by the Barriers, a Northwest Arkansas family on a journey to adopt a young girl in Peru—and want to hear more of our reader's adoption tales! You can share your story with us by filling out the questionnaire at LittleRockFamily.com/AdoptionMonth; we’ll publish each submission on our website throughout the month.

"He Chose Us..."

Clint, Skylar and Lindsay Overman

"I know people go through many hurdles to adopt a child, but this is very special to me. When I got pregnant with my daughter, Skylar, I knew that I’d be a single mom. I wasn’t given an option to have a second parent in her life. While I was pregnant, I found out that she would have severe disabilities. It was never what I expected having a child would be like. I was a single mom for 7 years and in those 7 years I was told Skylar wouldn’t make it three or four times. She was put in palliative care and eventually on hospice.

I met my husband just as Skylar was put into Palliative Care. I was very bitter about what had happened and so I was totally against [a second parent] adopting her. I felt as if no one had been part of the hardest things I had been through, so I wanted to keep her as just mine.

That all changed when I met Clint. I assumed that I would be a single mom forever and that finding a man that would accept her and accept our life would be impossible—but he never thought anything of it. He loves us and so does his family. We got married and immediately started the adoption process. I wanted Skylar to share our last name. When Skylar was placed in hospice, I started preparing her burial plans so having her name the same as ours [and the family plot] was extremely important.

Also, this is the first time in Skylar's 9 years that we can say that she has a dad. I even bought her first "I love my dad" shirt right before the adoption. Clint is an incredible man who loves me and loves Skylar and would do anything for us. I am lucky to have him as her dad. He came into a situation and embraced it when he didn’t have to. He chose us and that makes it very special."

"We are all so in love."

"We wanted to extend our family after our oldest turned 3. Due to medical conditions, Jason and I decided it best to expand our family another way. We heard a sermon series at church from Galatians about being adopted by God and thought that was a wonderful way to extend our family.

After 14 months of paperwork, home studies, and the waiting process, we brought our second child home from the hospital. He was officially adopted at 9 days old. We are all so in love!"
