October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month, and Cindy Young of Aspire Christian Academy is as aware as any educator.

Young, who founded ACA with Suzanne Fullerton in 2011, is a speech therapist and dyslexia expert who has made it just one of many conditions that Aspire Christian helps pupils to overcome. ACA was designed for students ages 4 to 12 who have normal-range intelligence scores but struggle with math, reading, spelling and comprehension.

Pupils have diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD, language delays, apraxia, sensory processing disorder and other specific learning disabilities. The school, at 12410 Cantrell Road, employs a trademark model called Therapeutically Enhanced Education, which combines biblical, educational and therapeutic methods from speech, occupational and physical therapies. It focuses on six domains of wellness: the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social and physical at home, school and in the community.

Classrooms with clean, organized work spaces are designed to maximize learning and aid functioning skills. ACA also goes beyond traditional classroom methods, using community outings to help students carry skills into the world beyond.
