Running hasn’t always been a big part of my life. Before and during my time in the Marine Corps, I truly disliked running because it felt forced, not to mention I was constantly being yelled at because I was too slow.

When I got out of the military I found myself quickly packing on the pounds and nothing I did in the gym really helped me. I finally decided to lace up my running shoes and get back on the pavement. Not only did I see myself losing weight, I actually started to enjoy running.

The obvious reason was it wasn’t forced, but taking a gradual approach and the great invention of the iPod made all the difference. Having the right music in a playlist can make running fun! Running with the right music helped me to become a better runner. I choose music that fits my pace, and there are plenty of websites out there to figure out what music fits your pace.

Another thing that helps to making running fun, is getting involved in local running events. For someone who has never run in a race, there is a special feeling  you get when you pass a cheer station or cross a finish line. Regardless if you are first or last, having a crowd of people cheering you on to keep pushing is a great feeling. It’s a feeling you will get at the Downtown Dash 2017 event on April 8.

Some of our runners have said we have the best cheer stations, which helps getting down the road a lot easier. We also throw a great before, during and after party! This year we have a lot of great additions to our parking lot party and VIP room.

It’s a family event with a 10K, 5K, and kids 1K. Our entertainment this year includes a mobile Mystery Mansion, games, face painting and much more. Come run or walk with us, and toast at the end while you’re rocking your Downtown Dash medal.

Registration for Downtown Dash ranges from $10-$35 and is available online through April 6 and on-site the day of the race. For a $5 discount off the 5K or 10K registration, use the code LRFam

The Dash begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 at the Junior League Building on Scott Street and the course features Little Rock landmarks such as the River Market, Clinton Library, and Arkansas Arts Center. More information is available here.
