Riverfest is throwing it back this year with a different kind of festivies on the final day of the weekend-long event.

Organizers separated family events from the festival for the first time 2016 and moved them to Springfest, a free event earlier in the year.

But now, in celebration of Riverfest's 40th anniversary, those events will be part of the final day of the decades-old festival.

Riverfest will hold its 40th anniversary celebration starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, in the River Market District. The day will conclude with a performance by Morris Day & The Time at 7:15 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at 9 p.m.

Events and attractions include:

  • Food vendors
  • Art & craft vendors
  • Carnival rides
  • Riverfest treasure hunt
  • Professional and amateur cake decorating competitions
  • Celebrity dunking booth
  • The PK Grill Steak Cook-off
  • Stick pony races
  • Crafts and face painting
  • Crawl through box city
  • Hero and construction zones
  • Heifer International petting zoo
  • Performances by local and regional bands
  • An attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most sparklers lit at one time

A Ferris wheel dominates Riverfest's Kid Zone.

According to DeAnna Korte, the festival’s executive director, the event will feel nostalgic and remind attendees of the early years of Riverfest — all the way back to when it began in 1977.

Admission to the event is $5 and children 10 & under are free! Ticket holders to the Riverfest music festival will gain free admission.
