The classic tale of "Alice in Wonderland" is familiar to most and the Disney movie has captivated generations of children and their parents.

Now, a ballet at the Arkansas Children's Theatre promises to hearken back to the 1951 version of Lewis Carrol's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

The show runs May 19-21 with 7:30 p.m. shows May 19 and 20, and 2 p.m. shows May 20 and 21 at the Arkansas Arts Center.

The Arkansas Festival Ballet's artistic director, Rebecca Stalcup, says the continuous storytelling and vibrant costumes should capture the hearts of audiences. Stalcup says that making classical ballet accessible is a driving force in her productions.

"One of my big things as artistic director, and I'm the choreographer as well, I want these shows to catch the audience's attention," Stalcup says. "This is our way of sharing classical ballet with an audience and it be appealing."

Getting kids to attend the ballet may seem daunting, but that's what's great about the "Alice in Wonderland" show. Stalcup says that the wide ranage of ages of the cast may help kids relate to the performances.

"Our youngest cast member is age 6," Stalcup says. "She is a flamingo, which is of course important to our croquet scene. She's also a little teacup. Seeing someone their size up on stage either helps them relate to what's going on onstage even better, or it makes them want to turn to their mom and dad and say, 'I wanna do this. I wanna be up on the stage.'"

Stalcup says she worked to make the show familiar because audiences will likely have a preconceived notion of how the story should play out.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children and students. The show was performed by the Arkansas Festival Ballet in 2011, but has since been updated. For more information on the show, call (501) 227-5320 or visit the Ballet's website.
