It’s a time-honored tradition: sending your kids off to camp for a week or two each summer. When I think of summer camp, I also think of bunk bed cabin stays, daily lake swims, eating an outrageous amount of s’mores and staying up into the wee hours of the night.

But recently, summer camps have become increasingly education focused. From museums to colleges, organizations from every side of the education spectrum are hopping on the summer camp train to offer top-notch programs.

Don’t get me wrong — I think these camps are excellent opportunities for students to discover passions, build on skills and develop connections and friendships. If your son or daughter is passionate about coding, music or science, by all means, dive in and sign them up for an educational camp. But then, set aside a week for some true camp-style fun as well.

As a former camp counselor myself, I’ve got a little expertise in the matters of canoe races, water balloon wars and horseback riding (to name a few of my favorite camp activities). And, I've seen just why overnight, back-to-the-roots summer camp is so valuable for kids of all ages.

1. Saying “See You Later” to Technology

Many overnight summer camps require kids to either turn off their phones or turn them in at the start of the week. They’ll be so busy each day they won’t even notice.

2. Getting Messy

With YouTube and Instagram, today’s teens are having an easy time of keeping up with fashion and makeup trends. Summer camp means saying “goodbye” to getting ready in the morning and rocking the T-shirts and messy hair while living in the moment.

3. Learning Independence

This is especially true for younger campers. Having even a few days (and nights) away from mom and dad builds confidence and is a great warmup for longer stays away. Plus, it’s like a mini-vacation for parents!

4. Trying New Things

Where else do you get to try horseback riding, a high ropes course, canoeing, archery, leather crafts, ziplining and more all in one week?! Kids are immersed in so many exciting activities in the span of their week at summer camp.

I wish I could head to camp this summer, but your kiddos will have to go in my place. So find the perfect camp for them in our guide and make sure they have the best time! I know they will.
