Dad.ur.day (proper noun): A weekly outing for just dads and kids, commonly known as mom’s favorite time of the week.

When my oldest son dropped his morning nap, he and my husband started going on Saturday morning adventures. Now five years and one brother later, their “Dadurday” tradition is still going strong.

Moms, I wholeheartedly recommend scheduling a little kid-free time for both you and your spouse each week. It’s a wonderful way to support each others’ self-care goals. This month in honor of Mother’s Day, we’ve come up with five fun and free activities for a Dadurday adventure.

5 Dadurday Ideas for May

1. Take a Kid-Friendly Hike

Anything that combines nature and exercise is a winner in my book. Here are three kid-friendly trails in our area:

Easy: The Kingfisher Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park showcases plants and wildlife as it winds along the Little Maumelle River. This easy half-mile trail is paved so even stroller-age kids can tag along.

Moderate: Kick things up a notch at Pinnacle Mountain State Park by taking on the Base Trail. This moderate hike should take about an hour.

Moderate: Climb the Cliffbrake Trail at Rattlesnake Ridge Natural Area to see one of the most dramatic rocky summits in the Eastern Ouachita Mountains.

2. Ride Bikes

Grab a riding toy and go. This activity also combines nature and great exercise. The Arkansas River Trail is a great beginner ride for kids.

3. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Take your next walk around the neighborhood to the next level by putting an educational spin on your time together. Challenge your kids to search for objects alphabetically, by color, by shape or by signs of the season.

4. Have a Picnic

Refuel after a hike, scavenger hunt or bike ride with a picnic. This gives mom a few more moments of quiet before you all enjoy some time as a family.

5. Share Music on a Joy Ride

Take turns picking your favorite songs as you take a joy ride through the city.
