Give apples a savory makeover with this German-inspired dish. It’s a delicious way to stretch your kids’ taste buds on a cool fall evening. 



  • 4 pounds uncooked bratwurst links

  • 4-1/2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth

  • 1 jar (32 ounces) sauerkraut, rinsed and well drained

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples (about 1-1/4 pounds), cut into wedges

  • 1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons caraway seeds

  • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced)

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 1 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1 cup light brown sugar

  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (extra soft, so it’s easy to mash)

  • 1/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats

  • 4 large apples, rinsed and patted dry
