It's going to be a super science weekend at the Arkansas Arts Center! First, the Arkansas Arts Center Children's Theatre continues its new Studio Show series with a three-day run of "Apollo: To the Moon." Then, the Super Sunday Free Family Funday workshop will focus on the chemistry of color to celebrate National Chemistry Week. Here's what you need to know!

"Apollo: To the Moon"

Originally produced by Smithsonian’s Discovery Theatre, "Apollo: To the Moon" is an history-packed celebration of our American Space Program, wherein young astronaut-hopeful Scott Gibson learns that it takes more than just a rocket and a space helmet to achieve his dream. It will take math, science, physical stamina and mental perseverance.

The show will be performed as part of the Arkansas Arts Center Children's Theatre's new Studio Show series. The Studio Shows are performed in the black box space, and are more experimental than the Main Stage shows audiences have come to expect from the AACCT.

Jeremy Matthey of North Little Rock, Ark., stars in this one-man show written by Mary Hall Surface, directed by John Isner with music by Lori Isner.

"Apollo: To the Moon" will run one weekend only. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Fri., 2 & 7 p.m. Sat., and 2 p.m. Sun. Oct. 9-11. Admission is $10, AAC members $8. For tickets: (501) 372-4000, ArkansasArtsCenter.org.

Super Sunday Free Family Funday

When you visit the museum this Sunday (Oct. 11), families can also participate in free art activities! The crafts will explore the chemistry of color to celebrate National Chemistry Week, coming up on Oct. 18-24.

Three free crafts will be offered:

  • Foam Printing: Create marbleized paper using small amounts of shaving foam and food coloring to create the marble design.
  • Permanent Rainbow Bookmark: Discover Interference Patterns by creating a thin film of clear fingernail polish on black card poster board.
  • Sharpie Tie-Dye: Explore chromatography of sharpie pens when they interact with a few drops of rubbing alcohol while creating a fun design on fabric. Kids will make small designs and glue the finished product onto a magnet, pin or barrette.

Super Sunday Free Family Funday is noon-3 p.m. Oct. 11; admission is free. For more info, visit ArkansasArtsCenter.org.
