Watching the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on TV in a couple of weeks is going to be pretty exciting. But do you know what’s even better? The chance to meet an Olympian right here in Little Rock.

Dan O’Brien, an Olympic gold medalist at the 1996 games, will be at the Clinton Presidential Center for two events in the next few days.

O’Brien is a decathlon champion - that means he competed in the javelin throw, discus throw, shot put, high jump, hurdles, long jump and various runs, ranging from 50 meters to 1,500 meters.

On Saturday, July 30 at noon, he will lead a kids track and field day for ages 6-11 where they can learn track and field basics with activities such as hurdles, the javelin throw, agility exercises and more. The day’s events are all free.

Looking for a less strenuous activity? On Friday, July 29 from 9-11 a.m. O’Brien will speak at public program overcoming personal adversity, his remarkable Olympic experience and more — a great activity for the older kids and something parents are sure to enjoy. The presentation is free but reservations are required either online or by calling (501) 748-0425.
