As a parent of two school-age kids, I (along with all Little Rock parents, I imagine) have been eagerly awaiting any details for the 20/21 school year. And with the recent release of video updates from PCSSD and LRSD superintendents, we now have a slightly better idea of how our local districts will approach school this fall.

Here’s what we know so far:

PCSSD

The gist of Superintendent Dr. Charles McNulty’s update is the district’s focus on flexibility, safety and academic excellence for the fall. Here are the main takeaways:

  • Families will be given multiple options.

    • Digital learning options will be available.

    • Traditional learning (if applicable) may include a staggered approach.

  • CDC and Department of Health guidelines will be followed.

  • Student and staff health will be a priority.

  • Curriculum for next year will meet or exceed previous standards.

  • If you have any questions, please contact communication@pcssd.org.

LRSD

For LRSD, Superintendent Mike Poore emphasized that the needs and support of our kids through the pandemic and recent protests is the district’s top priority more than ever. Flexible delivery is key here, too:

  • Families will be given multiple options:

    • LRSD is planning to have a physical presence at school, alternate days are a possibility.

    • Virtual delivery will be available and continually improved.

    • Blended delivery with some students at home and some in the classroom is a possibility.

  • The district will begin working with parent and staff focus groups over the next couple weeks to shape strategy.

  • Electives will return.

  • Teachers will receive professional development for social-emotional learning.

Here’s what we don’t know yet:

Districts are still waiting to hear COVID-19 guidelines from the Arkansas Department of Health. The ADH will give schools guidance on social distancing needs, temperature checks, mask protocol and more. The department’s school recommendations are expected in early July.
