"Disney On Ice: Dare to Dream" Q&A:

Principal Skater Joseph Jacobson, who plays Flynn Rider from the film Tangled, spoke with Little Rock Family about life on the road and soaring through the air on Rapunzel’s hair.

Little Rock Family: Do the cast members have time to explore the cities where you perform?

Joseph Jacobson: I’ll have two days off to explore and see Little Rock. I usually kind of wing it. I don’t like to have too many definite plans and I usually take recommendations from the locals. I’ve loved to travel since I was really young. That’s one of the reasons I loved competitive figure skating. It pushed me to get better and travel even more.

LRF: You skated competitively until a few years ago. Is it different to perform in these types of productions?

JJ: It’s quite different in that you’re performing up to 12 times a week, so you get really comfortable in front of a crowd. But there are a lot of similarities. We still like to push the technical aspects of our skating, to make the show difficult and interesting. We train with caution, but at the same time we want to make the show as fun as possible.

LRF: In the movie Tangled, Flynn Rider is a rakish character with a lot of charm and physical humor—what do you enjoy most about playing him?

JJ: It’s a lot of fun for me. We share a lot in common because of our mannerisms. He’s such a fun character because you don’t have to take it too seriously, and you get to interact with the audience. Plus, we do a flying silk act, where we descend from the tower on Rapunzel’s hair. So it’s more of a circus act, and it was a new skill for me to learn.

LRF: Rapunzel’s hair had a life of its own in the film; does it ever get in the way?

JJ: We’re able to pull it off extremely well. It’s a huge challenge for our creative team to convey how much hair she has and how we can react with it. It’s very lifelike that we’re flying from her hair using circus techniques.

LRF: Tell us about your favorite scene or act in the show.

JJ: I love the interaction with Maximus, the horse. He’s one of my favorite characters. We have some very talented skaters who make him very lifelike.

Our finale is also phenomenal. We feature nine of the princesses on the ice and it becomes a great big party with Mickey and Minnie and Maximus. The kids love it.

LRF: What has been your favorite moment of the tour so far?

JJ: There have been so many great moments. One of my favorite things is when we visit hospitals and help promote charities around the country. Sometimes we send princesses out in costume and sometimes we’ll hold skating parties and teach them how to skate. My favorite part of the job is trying to brighten their days.
