With kids whose schedules rival those of the busiest adults, it can be difficult to make time for nutritious meals. But meal planning can be easy and fun for the whole family when you and your kids utilize an integral part of your everyday life—technology. Families can download these free apps—two nutrition-focused and one active—to make healthier choices together.

Fooducate

  • Fooducate enables teens to scan a barcode and see the nutrition grade for the food item (A to D).
  • If your food gets a low grade, the app will suggest healthier alternatives.
  • Your teen can also track calorie intake, dietary choices and exercise. This is an excellent way to redirect some unhealthy habits for the entire family.
  • Free; compatible with Android and Apple iOS 7.0 or later.

Nicolas’ Garden

  • Inspired by a 7-year-old picky eater, this app offers recipes that kids can prepare themselves or with minimal assistance from an adult.
  • It includes step-by-step instructions and a grocery store checklist.
  • Kids can make their own healthy meals and share their recipes with friends and family.
  • Free; compatible with Android and Apple iOS 6.0 or later.

NFL Play 60

  • This NFL- and American Heart Association-approved app features a tutorial that runs kids through the commands, while a virtual “coach” gives encouraging feedback and reminders.
  • Your child can control his or her avatar by running and jumping with the smartphone or tablet in-hand.
  • Collecting coins earns them NFL team gear and football power-ups for their avatar—a great incentive for staying active!
  • Free; compatible with Android and iOS 5.0 or later.
