Getting outside is so important to your mental and physical health. A few hours of fresh air and sunshine on a beautiful, 70-degree day are enough to put anyone in the best mood.

We all know that Arkansas summers can be brutal, but that’s why you should take advantage of these last few weeks of spring weather. And even in the summertime, head to the lake or pool for a cool day despite the heat.

In this issue, we’re talking all about fully immersing in the outdoors and camping at Arkansas State Parks. The story, starting on page 11, shares info on everything from gear to safety to campfire recipes.

But camping isn’t for everyone. So if you’d rather stay local and sleep in your own bed at night, here are a few of my favorite places to hang out outdoors right around town.

1. Lake Willastein Park in Maumelle

Lake Willastein Park

This spot is a hidden gem! A two-mile paved trail loops around the water and there’s a playground, charcoal grills and picnic tables to use. I also love setting up a hammock in the more wooded area behind the playground for a peaceful afternoon of reading and relaxing.

2. Two Rivers Park

Two Rivers Park

A popular spot, and with good reason! The view of Pinnacle Mountain from the bridge is breathtaking, especially at sunset. And when the leaves change in the fall it’s a sight you don’t want to miss.

3. Scenic Overlook at Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Pinnacle Mountain

Did you know you can get a great view without hiking up the entire mountain? Just head to the Visitors Center at 11901 Pinnacle Valley Road and take a short (about 75 yards) walk to the overlook where you can see the Arkansas River Valley, Pinnacle Mountain, and Lake Maumelle.

Now get outside and explore!
